Includem welcomes the latest statistics showing a 20% reduction in school exclusions in Dundee since 2012/13.
As a partner in the Inclusion Plus project Includem has been working with four of the schools in Dundee with the highest school exclusion rates to support young people to reengage with education and these statistics are evidence that this approach is working.
Includem’s Chief Executive, Angela Morgan said:
“Our focus is on the young person outside of the classroom – at home and with their families. We know that young people are only ready to learn when they are emotionally stable with positive relationships in their lives.
“Programmes like this get to the root causes of exclusion from school and lead to both improved attainment for young people and reduced public expenditure in the short and long term”.
“To reduce school exclusion, we have to identify and tackle the underlying problems with personalised support for the young people. Then teachers and the agencies working with them in schools can do their best job in helping young peoples learning.”
