Includem has welcomed the announcement today by the Minister for Childcare and Early Years that the minimum age of criminal responsibility in Scotland will rise to 12.
“We are delighted the Scottish Government intends to raise the minimum age of criminal responsibility to 12.
“Includem took an active part in the Advisory Group on the Minimum Age of Criminal Responsibility and shared the experiences of the young people we support. We firmly believe the current minimum age is too low and welcome this shift.
“Raising the minimum age comes with a number of complex other issues around retention of samples, disclosure of behaviour and the detail of any exceptions Ministers might propose.
“We look forward to continuing to play a constructive part in those discussions and utilise our practice experience to ensure the legislation is not just well meaning but robust and practical”
