We believe that all children and young people should have a voice. Behind every child or young person we work with there is a story, which they are best placed to tell. They might not have decided the beginning, or the middle, but they can re-write the ending.

Wellbeing & Sustainable Development (Scotland) Bill Consultation Response

Wellbeing is at the heart of what includem workers do daily to support children, young people and families to achieve a better life. From our recent research with the families we support, it is clear that change is needed.

“I’m tired of struggling and worrying about heating and having enough food. I am sad that I can’t give my child some of the things she asks for.” (Parent supported by includem, It Is Not A Choice! Report 2022)

We welcomed the opportunity to respond to the consultation of the proposed Wellbeing and Sustainable Development (Scotland) Bill. It has the potential to:

  • Ensuring Scotland’s commitment to the well-being of current and future generations is the primary driver of policy and implementation.
  • Bring greater focus on prevention and addressing root causes such as child poverty.
  • Support joined up working across public bodies to tackle systematic drivers of unsustainable challenges like climate change.

This potential can only work if the seldom-heard voices of children, young people and families are listened to. Regular participation that identifies what matters to the people of Scotland must include a diverse range of voices – particularly those with a high level of distrust of public authorities and those facing destitution or social exclusion.

“Listen to people who live like this.”

(Parents supported by includem, It Is Not A Choice! Report 2022)

Includem would welcome clarity on how the Bill will impact or link to definitions in legislation on children’s wellbeing under GIRFEC and the SHANARRI indicators (Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible and Included) and how it can build Hope in our communities.
