Transforming Lives is our policy and public affairs campaign!

From supporting children and young people through early intervention – changing their journey from risk-taking behaviours to one of a positive destination; keeping families together through our whole family approach or supporting young people with their mental health – we support people to transform their lives.

Children's Rights

Everything we do at includem, promotes and respects the human rights of children and young people.
“Enshrining into law the rights every child has will ensure that Scotland’s children and young people grow up healthy and safe with their views taken into consideration in any decision that affects them. These principles are at the heart of the work we do at includem.” Martin Dorchester

includem’s model of practice has always been rights-based and we work tirelessly to continue to improve the outcomes for the children and young people we support.

The incorporation of the UNCRC will strengthen children’s rights in law, enable better monitoring and implementation of rights-based practices and policies, and provide a cultural shift in how we view and work with children and young people in Scotland.

This is particularly relevant to the children and young people we work with who are:

  • Living in poverty
  • Care experienced
  • Involved in the justice system
  • Struggling to engage with education
  • In need of mental health support

Youth Justice

Our Justice Team works across the Central Belt with the overall outcome to reduce the number of children and young people in conflict with the law.
"They treat you like a person and not a problem" Young Person

Our youth justice support is about supporting children and young people to make positive changes to transform their lives. Our strengths-based, relationship-based approach is led by children and young people. We successfully support young people to engage positively, or re-engage with education, their communities and families. Our policy work is focused around ensuring children and young people in conflict with the law have the support they need at the right time and that we view children in conflict with the law through a children’s rights lens.

Education

Our work is underpinned by Article 29 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full.
“In my previous role as a teacher I know how important early intervention is in keeping young people living with challenges from slipping further out of reach.” includem Partner

We pride ourselves on providing wrap-around support to children, young people and families. Most of the children and young people experience challenges to engaging in education and raising their attainment.

It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment. Includem’s trauma-informed approach supports victims and perpetrators of violent and aggressive behaviour. Often children and young people are both. Our scaffolding approach is aligned with The Promise, and we want to continue supporting the goal of ending exclusions for care-experienced children and young people and improving their attainment.

Mental Health

We recognise that children, young people and families we work with are at high risk of experiencing bad mental health. This affects their attainment, wellbeing, relationships and engagement with the community. We work to transform lives by improving the mental health of children, young people and families.
"Includem have been the only people who have listened to me since leaving care. They have saved my life." Young Person

The mental health of children and young people is at risk from poverty, violence, trauma, social and digital pressures. At the same time provision for mental health services is stretched. We work with children, young people and their families to improve their mental health and wellbeing. Our early intervention model aims to promote the mental health of children, young people and families and prevent them from reaching crisis point.

Challenge Poverty

We believe that no child or young person should miss out because of circumstances beyond their control. We provide extra support to the children, young people and families that we support, many of whom are affected by poverty and don't have access to things that we may take for granted.
"It is our collective shame that around 240,000 children in Scotland are still living in relative poverty. Like many in the third sector, we will continue to deliver support to children, young people and families in need through the use of our Young Person’s Fund." Martyn Walker, includem Communications & Public Affairs Manager

The children, young people and families we work with live in some of the most deprived areas of Scotland. At includem we know that poverty is a political choice. We work with partners to campaign against child poverty and promote solutions for change. We are part of the End Child Poverty Coalition UK.

Our Young Person’s Fund provides resources for children, young people in families and we support those we work with to access benefit maximisation services and advice.
